Her Life Story:

Mary Ellen Gordon was born on May 15, 1936 to Louisa Cook Moreland and Newton Webster Moreland in Newnan, Georgia. At the age of 4, alongside her parents and brother, Mary Ellen moved to Dayton, Ohio. From early on, Mary Ellen, or "Slim" as her peers often referred to her, set her sights high and excelled in her academics, graduating from Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School (Dayton, Ohio) in 1954, as a member of The National Honor Society and an active member of Student Council.

Mary Ellen knew at the age of three years old that she wanted to be a nurse and she did exactly that. She began her nursing career at The Jewish Hospital Association School of Nursing and later fulfilled her licensure requirements at The College of Mount St. Joseph.

Mary Ellen faithfully devoted her life to caring for others while working at the Cincinnati VA Medical Center for over 30 years serving many of those years as a Critical Care Nursing Supervisor. Soon after her retirement, she returned to the workforce and exercised her love for nursing in the emerging field of home health care with the Parke Home Health Care agency.

While working as a registered nurse, Mary Ellen was introduced through a mutual friend to psychiatric technician, Raymond Gordon. The two quickly fell in love and married November 18, 1961 at Corinthian Baptist Church (Dayton, Ohio). Following their wedding, Mary Ellen moved to be with her husband in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she would soon start her career and build her family.

Mary Ellen was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church of Kennedy Heights where she served as a teacher and superintendent for the Sunday school department. Many of Mary Ellen's days were spent thrifting at Goodwill, watching professional and college sports, enjoying old westerns like Gunsmoke, Bonanza and Wagon Train, making daily phone calls to check on and pray with her beloved friends, and meditating on God's word through various Christian broadcasting networks.

Mary Ellen's days were characterized by her humor, wisdom and fun-loving spirit. In the years preceding her transition, Mary Ellen celebrated her first surprise birthday party at 82 years old, and was surprised with front row seats to see one of her favorite entertainers, Gladys Knight in Concert, at 83 years old. Mary Ellen found even greater joy when she became a member of Light of The World Church of Cincinnati, Ohio in 2018.

Mary Ellen lived a very simple life and was known by many for her generosity. Mary Ellen faithfully gave to her church, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Trinity Broadcasting Network, Christian Broadcasting Network, Wounded Warriors of America, City Gospel Mission, People Working Cooperatively and any other individual or organization she was led to pour into.

Mary Ellen devoted her life to loving God and loving people. Her compassion, love, kind heart and genuine friendship will live on in those who were blessed with the opportunity to love and be loved by her.

Mary Ellen Gordon, lovingly known as Muffin, was called home, Saturday, January 2, 2021, in the comfort of her home in Blue Ash, Ohio.

Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her brother, Rufus Moreland (Mary); children, Lisa Gordon Givens (Christopher), Roger Gordon (Jermaine), and Ryan Gordon (Quita); grandchildren, Kiyana Gordon, Christian Givens, Eric Chapman- Givens and Helena Gordon; grandpups, Duran Gordon and Tyson Gordon; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and Facebook fans.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her devoted husband of nearly fifty years; Raymond Gordon, parents; Louisa and Webster Moreland, brother; Newton Moreland, sister-in-law; Eloise Dunham, son; Christopher Gordon (Rozalyn), and granddaughter; Bryana Gordon.
